Boundaries of Ambiguity

Ke Sklárně 3213/15, Praha MeetFactory

3. 5. - 7. 7. 2024

The collective exhibition in main gallery of MeetFactory presents ten artists whose common approach is a creative balance between free art and design. Their works grow out of applied objects, but are generally conceived as challenging experiments in form and material, pushing (and crossing) the boundaries of design objects into the realm of free art. These works are therefore more like complex sculptures that mask their original applied function with their surface as mimicry.

French artist Audrey Large defines this way of working as follows: "I think of digital images as a material that I work with to create objects, not with the primary purpose of functionality, but rather under the pretext of proximity to the viewer, to challenge their perception of materiality. This questioning of materials requires a rethinking of the tools with which they are manipulated; thus questioning the status of the designer whose role is to navigate 2D images, 3D files, moving images and objects. In this context, I am moved by the question of the surface and its potential to be a fictional and ambiguous substance on which both reality and hyperreality can reside."

Tadeáš Podracký uses the material deconstruction of applied forms to the point of sculptural expression; David Střeleček, like Johana Hnízdilová, combines traditional ceramics with eco and solarpunk conceptual approaches in a hybrid way; Anna Jožová places her glass objects in warningly anthropocenic contexts; and Tereza Vinklárková creates so-called "soft sculptures" that broadly combine applied and therapeutic functions. The exhibition will also include textile and interwoven objects by this year's Jindřich Chalupecký Prize winner Judita Levitnerová, screens by Roman Štětina and the artistic duo Julia Gryboś & Barbora Zentková.

The exhibition is conceived as a thematic equivalent to the solo show of the duo Alex Selmeci & Tomáš Kocka Jusko, which will run concurrently at the Kostka Gallery.
