Alex Selmeci & Tomáš Kocka Jusko: The Light of One Lamp Only

Alex Selmeci & Tomáš Kocka Jusko are a Slovak artist duo, currently living in Prague. They create complex intermedia installations and environments that balance between free art, design and architecture. When creating objects, they often work with a specific image or metaphor, usually the entry point is a tool and its use in a specific situation ("motive").

The solo exhibition at the Kostka Gallery is the thematic equivalent to the collective exhibition at the large MeetFactory gallery. The artists conceive the exhibition as a preview or a free composition of actual works and objects, without the aim of any resolution. In particular, they present new objects from the series Columns and Towers, which are related to the exterior work Cuckoo (2023), inspired by the architecture of birds, the interacting human and animal construction and its transcendence. The motif of the leeward side is important here, a kind of safe area for building, growing, anchoring, entangling or temporarily surviving. In relation to the objects, smaller series of used objects are placed in the space, co-creating the light, sound and spatial conditions of the gallery.

Alex Selmeci (*1994, Rožňava) and Tomáš Kocka Jusko (*1994, Košice) are a multidisciplinary artistic duo who have been working under the name Selmeci Kocka Jusko since 2017. They are graduates of the Studio of Contemporary Image at the Faculty of Arts of TUKE in Košice and in 2023 they completed their Master's degree at the Studio of Intermedia II of Dušan Zahoranský, Pavla Sceranková and Roman Štětina at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Their artistic projects have been presented at several solo (Galeria TIC, Brno; Berlin Model, Prague; East Slovak Gallery, Košice; Temporary Parapet, Bratislava; VUNU Gallery, Košice) and group exhibitions (FUTURA Gallery, Prague; Galerie Jelení, Prague; Hotdock Project Space, Bratislava; GAVU, Cheb). In 2019, they completed a residency at the Banská st a nica Cultural Centre and in 2020 a residency at AIR FUTURA in Prague.
