Chris Hunter (b. 1983, Switzerland) lives and works in Basel. His work spans from intimate studio work to opulent collective productions. His choice of material spans from Arte-Povera-like, discarded everyday objects to colourful watercolour sketches. Memories and traces of life and environment are the base of his work. He searches for the poetry and humour in daily life and fixes those moments and stories onto seemingly ephemeral materials.

“I would like to work in my studio like I do in my kitchen. I compose the available ingredients like music. Arrangements form a micro-society. Taste experiences are repeated and varied. Both the preparation and the food are a pleasure. The later recollection is the taste. And everything always has to do with balance. Equilibrium does not set everything to zero. Rather, balance brings things to light. I greet all my friends and also my families —you are like the worms that turn the earth into humus – you help writing the story.”

Other work fields are art educator at the Kunstmuseum Olten and artist-curator with the collective Dr. Kuckucks Labrador. His curatorial activities include the International Performance Festival Giswil and Frida Magazin. Hunter is a founding member and board member of Junges Theater Graubünden and has been on stage and set designer for the latest theatre works by Les Reines Prochaines and Friends*. In 2017 he received the Canton of Graubünden Promotion Prize, in 2018 the Somedia Art Prize and in 2021 the Cultural Prize of the City of Basel, together with Les Reines Prochaines and Friends*
