12. April – 11. May 2012

Curator: Jiří Ptáček
Opening: 12th April at 6pm

Shyness, too much respect or simply coincident often prevents us from addressing a person, whom we might consider close, similar, or related to us. We might regret that for the rest of our life, only wondering about possible relations. Sláva Sobotovičová and Jan Turner decided to investigate this kind of relation. After years of getting to know each other through their artistic work, they told each other, by a lucky chance, how many parallels and mutual inspirations they find. This opened a possibility to try out their individual visions in a common project. Will they confirm or question their relations? What kind of shape will these relations take?

The show called Distant Cousin, White Cousin investigates the intersection of two artist’s mindsets. Naturally, the theme is self-reflection through "thinking of the other", translating individual systems of metaphors to the other, means of communication in a "closed system" of two people, the shift from the Self to the Other. Cousins, however far from us they are in the family tree, always stand for our shadows, ghosts. Their "otherness" paradoxically resembles ourselves in different details. Sobotovičová and Turner's experiment is not only a confrontation of two artists. It is also an investigation of the concept of the Other within the creative process.
