gallery MeetFactory / Being There

21. April – 30. May 2010

The title of this exhibition says it all: Being There. A variation on the English expression "I guess you had to be there," which either refers to a flatly received anecdote or a moment of simple incomprehension, being there suggests a state of 'getting it,' or ironically, not getting it (as in the eponymous film and novel written by Jerzy Kosinski, which is very much about getting it by not getting it, or rather, being there, by not really being there at all). That said, in the expression "being there" just who, or what does the verb refer to? And more importantly, where is 'there'? Is it here? Or elsewhere? And when is there? Did it already happen? Is it happening now? Or has it yet to happen? Despite its assertive nature is there not an essential absence at the heart of this phrase?
