Celebrating Moondog: François Mardirossian + Pulse Wave

Moondog. The Viking of Sixth Avenue, avant-garde music genius, blind composer born as Louis Thomas Hardin in 1916 was recognized by Philip Glass and Steve Reich as the initiator of their own sonic revolution to come, but also admired by artists such as David Bowie, Janis Joplin, Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Leonard Bernstein, Arturo Toscanini or Igor Stravinsky.

His singular approach bridged the gaps between the art of free jazz improvisation, the science of harmony, polyphony and counterpoint and intuitive approaches to rhythm-building inspired by the indigenous music of North America into a body of work that pioneered the concept of minimalism in music.

François Mardirossian, French pianist with a passion for minimalist music and a co-director of Superspectives festival, will present Moondog's selected works in a solo piano concert. 

Warming up the stage will be Pulse Wave, the ambient project of Tomáš and Prokop Šenkyřík who just released their debut joint record this spring. The album was named Album of the Week by Respekt magazine in March. The tracks presented by the duo are a sonic diary of events and feelings from the previous year. "The individual tracks reflect the tension between two parallel worlds, the real and the virtual. The compositions try to slow down this world. The live version of the album brings a world of synthesizer sounds, sampled violins and field recordings."

The concerts will round off the day's block of lectures from the Synapse Knowledge series, which will focus, among other topics, on Moondog's life, work and legacy, as presented by French author of Moondog's biography Amaury Cornut. A ticket for the concert also guarantees admission to the afternoon lectures.
