“Then comes a dog, followed by a long line of cars moving forward very slowly. Now there’s a deafening concert of blaring motor-horns. I see a number of drivers raise the bonnets of their cars (...) grimacing heads emerge from every window. Among the vehicles I notice two hearses: one bears a small white coffin, the other a big black one.” (Arrabal, 1966)
Ash Wednesday, the last day of carnival festivities. While being tied by a chain sunken into the wall, he observes the endless marching crowd. While the street festivities culminate, he reminisces two females who kept visiting him – and possibly tying him up - in that room. Neither the circumstances nor the reason for his imprisonment are revealed, just like he himself remains unknown. In a repetitive rhythm, we are merely looking into the individual episodes featuring various relations in which subtle psychic violence and unconfessed sexual sadism establish a peculiar comic. The main character’s unreadable mentality guides us to questions on freedom and condemnation. Yet the dialogue only provides limited answers. Dramatic tension creates contrast between the private world of erotic slavery and the minimal need for escape. The instinctive fantasies are depicted as a form of love.
