Rhythmic acrobatics of psychedelic dub trio Holy Tongue and Farida Amadou's uncompromising bass experiments will shake MeetFactory in April
Holy Tongue began as a studio collaboration between percussionist Valentina Magaletti and producer Al Wootton. With three critically acclaimed EPs behind them they have transitioned into a live trio with the addition of Susumu Mukai. Their high energy live sets invoke the experimental dub of On-U-Sound, the frenetic rhythms of 23 Skidoo, Liquid Liquid and ESG. Psychedelic, free-form, high energy, spiritual dub-dance music.
"On Deliverance And Spiritual Warfare, the band presents their most focused work yet, fully exploring their diverse influences—from the opening Andalusian Catholic march to heavyweight dub via jazz, post-punk, mystical percussion tracks, and techno. The album features guest appearances from the legendary Steve Beresford on prepared piano, as well as Abraham Parker and David Wootton on brass." In 2024, HT followed up with The Tumbling Psychic Joy of Now (AD 93), created in collaboration with dub visionary and master of psychedelic electronics, Sam Shackleton. Early this year, the trio released a heavyweight 7-inch Ambulance.
Joining the bill is bass improviser FaridaAmadou who returns to MeetFactory after two years. Amadou, one of the most distinctive and radical voices in Belgium’s vibrant improv scene, has since released her debut album When It Rains It Pours. The record is a compact and concentrated distillation of her singular, intuitive approach to playing bass, incorporating syncopated rhythms, walls of noise, feedback, and unconventional chains of effects pedals.
And while the album is outstanding, listening to it can hardly convey the transformative intensity of experiencing Amadou's playing live. “A genius album of solo-bass explorations from a scene veteran who refuses to rest on her laurels, mining minimalist angularisms and rippling rhythms that challenge our preconceptions of jazz, noise, and rock. If you’re into anything from Slint to Steve Reich, Shellac to Christian Marclay, or those quiet bits before the storm on the best Sonic Youth—this is the shit,” as Boomkat aptly describes it.
