Last Open Studio: Conrad Eric Armstrong

Since August, 2021, Conrad Eric Armstrong has used his time as a MeetFactory resident to create works that explore association, optics, detail, and narrative. Working in both 2D and 3D, his efforts utilize a visual language whose use of positive and negative space calls to mind dichotomies like known and unknown, past and present, or matter and antimatter, to name a few. In the realm of the MeetFactory studio, you are welcome to follow Conrad's activities that accumulated over the course of the last few months to create a merzbau-like structure.

The stories and narratives behind these works will hopefully unravel with the help of the artist himself during his last open studio. Conrad will open his studio to the public for the last time on Tuesday, January 18th from 17:00-22:00. We will also be opening two new exhibitions at MeetFactory galleries, Studnice moudrosti / Wells of Wisdom & Martin Toldy: Psychológia nočnej mory. All are welcome.

Conrad Eric Armstrong (1980) is a Kenya-born U.S. citizen who has lived and worked in Prague since 2004. His work is concerned with the distinctions and similarities between things, with cause and effect, and by the relations thereof across time and space. Some of his works employ mnemonic techniques to visually encode sets of information, while others use visual linkages to create interrelated arrays of images. Often, he also uses aspects of verbal and visual storytelling that may either have clear narrative content (e.g. the history of King Philip’s War in colonial New England) or that may more obliquely imply stories through the juxtaposition of elements. 

Conrad is also currently employed as the tutor of the Visual Arts master’s program at UMPRUM, and since 2016 has collaborated with Viktor Valášek as part of the artistic duo CONVICT.
