The Czech premiere of a documentary film about the legendary psych-rock band Butthole Surfers will open with a live online interview with band members Paul Leary & Jeff Pinkus
“I wanted to make a doc that was in the spirit of this band who always went for it and never seemed to give a fuck what people might think.”
Their shocking live performances were just as famous as their music. Their chaotic, drug-fuelled live shows took place in front of a projection screen showing raw 16mm film footage of medical autopsies and other bizarre and morbid scenes. Butthole Surfers' frontman Gibby Haynes would run around the stage, fire a shotgun loaded with blanks, use a megaphone to sing, and often set cymbals and other instruments on fire. They uniquely blended extreme punk with elements of pop, and in 1996 they surprisingly reached number one on the Billboard charts with the song “Pepper”.
