“I first had the chance to see The Phantom of the Opera as a teenager in elementary school. I came across the film by accident—silent films from the 1920s definitely weren’t something I actively sought out at the time. But what has stuck with me to this day is the film’s intense horror atmosphere, which it manages to build masterfully with minimal expressive tools and by playing on our imagination. Sometimes, all it takes for a chillingly dark authenticity is ominous silence, Lon Chaney’s pale mask, and the shadow play of the Paris Opera’s underground..."
