“So far so good… So far so good… So far so good.”

Hate breeds nothing but more hate. La Haine, a raw and visually explosive portrait of racial and cultural tensions in contemporary France, follows twenty-four hours in the lives of three friends in a rundown Parisian suburb, the day after a wave of street riots was harshly suppressed by the police. Director Mathieu Kassovitz’s cinematic manifesto against violence remains as relevant today as it was thirty years ago.

Vinz, a Jew; Hubert, an African; and Saïd, an Arab, aimlessly loiter in a hopeless concrete jungle. Deep within this trio of young men, who represent thousands of young people from immigrant families in France, defiance against marginalisation smoulders until it reaches an inevitable boiling point. Their friend Abdel is fighting for his life as a result of police brutality. Will he succumb to his injuries? Will the boys take revenge on the police officer responsible using his own weapon?
