Before directing Barbie, Greta Gerwig had already made a name for herself among fans of independent cinema with her film Lady Bird.
Seventeen-year-old Christine MacPherson, played by Saoirse Ronan, is in her final year of high school. She has a complicated relationship with her mother, and life in her hometown of Sacramento feels unbearably stifling. This honest portrayal of adolescence—elevated into a comedic realm largely thanks to the dramatic temperament of its protagonist—earned Saoirse Ronan, among other accolades, a Golden Globe for Best Actress.
It took her a few years, but the film eventually found its way into her heart. Michaela Žůrková, a member of the venue’s resident production team, regrets not watching Lady Bird sooner.
“I may have even shed a tear during the film—but let’s not dwell on that. It’s a gentle, sweet, and sensitive comedy, where complex ideas are often cleverly distilled into a single sentence. The film shows that magical and beautiful things can be found in the ordinary everyday, even if we often only realize it in retrospect.”
