The Swedish hit A Man Called Ove, based on the novel by Fredrik Backman, tells the story of a grumpy old man who scorns everyone around him—until a young Pakistani family moves in next door. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and even received an American remake starring Tom Hanks. The original film reflects a truly authentic sense of Nordic irony.
The film A Man Called Ove was selected by theater producer Magda Juránková.
“Saab or Volvo”—according to Magda, these three words perfectly capture the essence of the film. She’s especially amused by the ongoing Saab vs. Volvo rivalry; unlike Ove, who is (unfortunately) a die-hard Saab fan, she’s team Volvo all the way. Magda is both thrilled and moved by how this black comedy reveals unexpectedly complex and deeply human themes—connection, friendship, and the ability to find joy in life,” shares Matěj Samec, interpreting Magda’s impressions.
