Summer Cinema: Man with a Movie Camera

Ke Sklárně 3213/15, Praha MeetFactory

Dziga Vertov’s avant-garde film classic Man with a Movie Camera (1929) is an electrifying montage of everyday life in the bustling cities of Moscow, Kyiv, and Odesa.
Through techniques such as multiple exposures, split screens, and slow motion, Vertov redefined the possibilities of cinema and visual effects aesthetics. Man with a Movie Camera regularly ranks among the greatest documentary films of all time in international film polls. At MeetFactory, it will be presented in a digitally restored version accompanied by an orchestral score composed by Michael Nyman.

The third film selected by the gallery section is described by curator Ján Gajdušek:

“Watching Man with a Movie Camera is like experiencing a fascinating, chaotic, and wildly playful mix of sensations stirred together by an enthusiastic lover of machines, cars, and the urban hustle. From the ordinary rush of a morning, the whirring of projector reels, and a pile of cinematic tricks, Vertov builds a rhythm in which the city itself becomes both actor and stage—and the tension rises purely through editing.”
