Matt Elliott's melancholic folk unlocks the darkest corners of the human soul. The Bristolian singer-songwriter and multiinstrumentalist will perform at MeetFactory at the end of July
Elliott's musical journey began in the mid 90s. After playing in various space rock bands from his native Bristol (Flying Saucer Attack, Movietone), he began an experimental solo venture with Third Eye Foundation. The project's claustrophobic noise collages, distorted guitars, and sampled beats reminiscent of trip-hop and drum and bass caught the attention of artists like Hood, Yann Tiersen, Mogwai, and Thurston Moore, with whom Elliott collaborated as Third Eye Foundation.
The turn of the millennium marked a shift in Elliott's work from electronic music to dark, dreamlike experimental folk, releasing The Mess We Made, the first solo album under his real name, in 2003. Following the release, Elliott moved to France and signed with label Ici, d'ailleurs... based in Nancy. His susbequent trilogy of records, influenced by chansons and Eastern European music — Drinking Songs, Failing Songs, and Howling Songs — released between 2005 and 2008, gained cult status over the years.
Elliott's experimental chamber folk explores themes of solitude and alienation, the transience of the human condition, self-destruction, and death through dark, existential lyrics. This contemplative and introspective spirit runs through his entire discography, including the most recent studio album The End of Days from 2023. The six lullabies for the end of time are a result of a collaboration with producer and composer David Chalmin.
Matt Elliott will return to Prague at the end of July. Before his solo show at MeetFactory on July 29, an interview and a Q&A will be held.
"On these tracks, Elliott seems to address the world from the sunless interior of an absinthe glass, with his rarified instrumental arrangements serving as the only thin balm available to keep his subjects from capsizing hopelessly into the ink-black, fathomless depths." — Pitchfork
