Wczasy + Ima Teva

The local crowds may know Wczasy from their superb live shows at Creepy Teepee or Pop Messe. This April, the Poznań-based synth-pop duo returns to the Czech Republic along with their new EP, Program.

Their new record is a contemplation of a world where people are pre-programmed to take on predetermined social roles. Wczasy take a critical look at this reality and asks the question "Why can't we be ourselves?"

In their music, Bartłomiej Maczaluk and Jakub Żwirełło tame the depressing reality with humor and exuberance, drawing on the nostalgia-inducing aesthetics of 80s cold wave bands (Marquis de Sade and Asylum Party to name a few). On their acclaimed 2018 debut Zawody, the band open up the themes of love, loss, alienation and the search for meaning in today's perpetually hectic times; these are also intertwined throughout their subsequent releases, from their second LP To wszystko kiedyś minie (2021) to this year's Program, which they will perform live on Monday 22 April at MeetFactory.

Opening the night will be Ima Teva, an electronic project of local artist Petra Juráčková. Her atmospheric sonic world can be both utterly unyielding as well as painfully intimate. "A world in which chamber vocals speak to you, and electronics and synths exist not in the roles of hedonistic saviours of the world, but rather as wounded ghosts of the past who won't let you sleep with their dirges."
