Youth Lagoon, the indie project of Idaho-based singer-songwriter Trevor Powers, is returning to MeetFactory with a new record

Life itself is a thunderstorm. In 2022, after a six-year hiatus in which he managed to release two experimental solo albums under his own name, Trevor Powers returned to his moniker Youth Lagoon. The bittersweet, post-traumatic comebsck album Heaven Is a Junkyard (2023, Fat Possum Records) was met with critical acclaim, most importantly though, it marked a new chapter in the story of one singular and well-loved songwriter project.

Following his successful 2011 debut The Year of Hibernation, which catapulted him to the forefront of the contemporary indie scene, Powers released two more albums as Youth Lagoon. With Savage Hills Ballroom (2015, Fat Possum Records) and a subsequent tour which marked his first-ever Prague show at MeetFactory, he decided to lay the project to rest, saying: "There is nothing left to say through Youth Lagoon. It will exist no more." Several years of experimentation followed, resulting in great solo records Mulberry Violence and Capricorn, both released under the artist's real name. A turning point came in 2021 when a severe allergic reaction led to serious health complications — Powers lost nearly thirty pounds and also his voice, being bound to only communicate through writing for several months. This experience ultimately led him back to Youth Lagoon.

This year, Youth Lagoon returns with his fifth album, Rarely Do I Dream — a collection of twelve hypnotic tracks that blur the lines between experimental chamber pop and psychedelic noir rock. Rooted in love and childhood memoir, Rarely Do I Dream is a triumph of American gothic imagination — where storybook innocence dissolves into a radioactive billow of teenage drifters, drug-addled hustlers, and old-world folklore. “This isn’t nostalgia. Life’s much more messy than that. It’s a dedication to all the parts of who I was, who I am, and who I’m going to be.”

The album is set for release on February 21st, following a major Youth Lagoon spring tour, including a show at MeetFactory. Save the date: Wednesday, June 11th.

Supporting the tour will be rising London-based singer-songwriter Clara Mann, presenting her full-length debut Rift.

Trevor Powers has long shown a penchant for reinvention, but his first album as Youth Lagoon in eight years feels like a homecoming; he’s never sounded so confident or at peace with himself.” — Pitchfork
