Antje Meichsner

Partner
Antje Meichsner

Antje Meichsner / Shannon Soundquist (based in Dresden, Germany) is a middle european multidisciplinary artist working conceptually with sound, film, text, graphics and typography.

In terms of content, she deals with the role of the body in society and which political discourses cross the individual. And how the individual crosses the landscape. Antje Meichsner has a particular focus on people who live in Saxon Switzerland. She has been conducting artistic research on this region since 2020 and has interviewed democratically minded people from there who grew up under the dominance of neo-Nazis. This has resulted in an essay film, a sound installation and radio feature (Deutschlandfunk, SWR). She has remixed the old local legends of the Lilienstein into a story and turned them into an experimental-narrative out-of-genre film.

At the moment she does artistic research about the invisibility of the local slavian heritage in German history and the suppression of the Sorbian language.

Her film works and musical compositions are cinematic, dark, noisy, non-tonal and conceptual. Their research question on sound is: How can the body be directly involved in composing electronic music? Her graphic work is created from digital mistakes and photos, which she transfers into the analogue world as screen prints. She makes conceptual music for theatre and contemporary dance.

Date of residency: 13. 5 – 31. 5. 2025

RESIDENCY PROJECT
„Relaxation music for edgy people“

For the Rockefeller and MeetFactory residency, Antje Meichsner will work on „Relaxation music for edgy people“. That means, she will create audio works and compositions specifically for the underwater sound system of the saltwater pool of the spa in Bad Schandau.

Her research questions are:
Which frequencies have a different effect under water, are more nerve breaking or quieter than when heard in the air? How has the music to be composed so that it can be reproduced with the available resources?
How many exciters with what power and which amplifiers need to be attached to the pool? How can their sound be mixed sensibly with the existing underwater sound system?
What role does relaxation play in the reception of underwater music?
How do salt water, warmth, heat and humidity influence the recipients?
And: How can I as an artist take the recipients into consideration with my work? What are the physical conditions of relaxation and how can I support this with my audio work?

The result will be an improvised live concert at Liquid Sound Festival in Bad Schandau 2025.
