Antonin Popelin

Antonin Popelin (b.1999) is a French artist based in Paris, France. His practice ranges from sculpture, installations to drawing, and seeks to explore space as a dimension both comforting and confronting individuals. Through intimate imagery to echoes of a collective or individual anxiety, his work invites to view space not only as a geographic dimension, but as a sensible and ambiguous one, made of hybridization, syncretic plays of matter, vulnerability and tension. Fake memories, dream fragments, personal mythology and seemingly mundane details come into play, forming the thread of a narration inviting us to rethink our relationship to the world as emotional beings.

RESIDENCY PROJECT

Blending elements referring to internet communities, medieval iconography in far-right nationalist movements, ethereal imagery, and practical home artifacts, Antonin Popelin conceptualizes an installation that acts as a personal space analogy, at the core of which resonates an intimacy distorted by the infiltration of larger systems. By setting ambiguity as a core concept in this new body of work, a confrontation between the potential hospitality of a space and its hostility transpires, putting in perspective the intricacies of vulnerability in personal, political, economical and social contexts. Intimate artifacts clash with symbols of violence, revealing the internal struggle one meets when facing the present world.
