Partner Bucharest
based artist-duo Anca Beneraand Arnold Estefan work in a range of media spanning
installation, video, performance, drawing, and urban intervention. They
examine power relations in social, economic, and political contexts to
reflect on society as being a tissue of laws and conventions that must be
permanently re-imagined. Specifically, their works reflect the confrontation
of the individual with forms of institutionalized power. Estefan and Benera call into
question not only definite, ethnic, cultural, or linguistically defined
affiliations, but also allude to the invention of conventions/fictions, such
as nation and state, or their imposed ethnic identities. They investigate geopolitical strategies, post-national subjectivities and the instability of history and its perception
between public and private memory.
Working
collaboratively since 2011, they have been shown at NGBK,
Berlin (2017), MeetFactory, Prague (2017), Futura Centre for Contemporary
Art, Prague (2017), The Jewish Museum, New York (2016), MAK Center for Art
and Architecture, Los Angeles (2016), ZKM Karlsruhe (2016), The School of
Kyiv (2015), Kunsthalle Wien (2014), Trafo Budapest (2014), 13th
Istanbul Biennial (2013), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2012), tranzit Bucharest
/Budapest /Bratislava (2013, 2015), Off Biennale, Budapest (2014), Camden Arts
Centre London (2011).
They are co-founders of CIV/Centre for Visual Intropsection, a collective-run institution In
Bucharest, where they generated public art actions, performative lectures and
publications between 2008-2012.
