Dorota Walentynowicz (b. 1977, Gdańsk, Poland) works in the field of photography, new media, installation and performance. A characteristic feature of her work is the continuous process of dialectical feedback between technology and nature, theory and practice, logic and intuitive cognition.
A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań (Photography, MA 2005), the University of Gdańsk (Classical Philology, MA 2001) and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in The Hague NL (Art-Science, MA 2007), she has recently defended a PhD at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk (2022) where she currently teaches at the Faculty of Sculpture and Intermedia. She is a laureate of numerous scholarships (including Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland, the Dutch Huygens Scholarship), participant of international residency programs (eg Kunsthalle in Krems, Museumsquartier in Vienna, Kunsthalle in Andratx, Apollonia European Art Exchanges in Strasbourg).
Dorota Walentynowicz’s installations and photographs have been exhibited, among others, at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, at the State Art Gallery in Sopot (individual exhibition 2015), at the WRO Biennale in Wrocław, at the Transmediale Festival in Berlin, at the V2 Institute of Media in Rotterdam, at the Kunstlerhaus in Vienna, at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Warsaw (individual exhibition 2011), at the Łaźnia Center for Contemporary Art in Gdańsk (individual exhibition 2009), at the Museum of Photography in Amsterdam, at the Stroom Foundation in The Hague (individual exhibition, 2009), at the Bunkier Sztuki Gallery in Krakow, at the City Gallery in Gdańsk, at the Kunstverein in Salzburg.
Much of her current activity is connected to collective practices that aim to develop horizontal and heterarchic methods of functioning within the existing models of artistic production. She is involved in several such initiatives, including curatorial collective Pisze / Mowi / Robi, artistic collective <dienstag abend >, Plenum of Caring Persons, and Seminarium Feministyczne.
