Jakub Słomkowski

Jakub Słomkowski (b. 1982, Poland) is a painter and musician. For the past four years, he has also been a father—an experience that has significantly influenced his artistic development and led him to reflect more deeply on his role within the artistic community. Today, he often questions whether, by following his path as a painter—one that he values primarily for the encounters it enables with individual viewers and that allows him to support his family—he might be operating on the margins of an art world that is continuously transforming and redefining itself.

His fields of interest include music (theater, film) and painting. He is a co-founder of several music bands, including Jankomorov, KubatwiceImprovis, and I Am Sorry Dave.

RESIDENCY PROJECT

During his three-week residency, Jakub will develop a concept based on the meaning of apotropaism. In his current process, he is focusing on the motif of turning into stone. He works within the framework of what he calls “stone moralism,” examining the concept of punishment as a portal – a boundary between worlds: the living and the dead, the human and the inhuman, the organic and the mineral.

He also intends to complete his work – both visual and musical – on Baba Yaga, who symbolizes a dualistic human energy and has been a long-term source of inspiration in his practice.

EDUCATION

Jakub Słomkowski is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he received his diploma in Painting and Multimedia. In 2004–2005, he studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Complutense University in Madrid. Earlier, between 2001 and 2003, he pursued studies in Art History at the University of Warsaw.
