Jura Shust (b.1983, Maladzeychna, Belarus; based in Berlin) explores the relationship between ritual and escapism. Intrigued by semantic polysemy, informational intoxication, and primal aspiration for an out-of-body experience, he reflects on how the mythological overlaps with the technological. Revising the linear and circular temporalities, Shust juxtaposes an archaic worldview with a futuristic perspective. Exploring the renewal cycle within organic decomposition and artificial synthesis, he is focused on the relationship between the human psyche and the natural world.
Based on scientific research, the artist’s practice merges various forms to construct mental landscapes illuminated by ethnoreligious beliefs and flooded by biopolitics.
Date of residency: 1. 2. – 31. 3.2025
RESIDENCY PROJECT
Jura Shust plans to use his time at the residency to focus on his ongoing multidisciplinary project, tentatively titled Turpentine Vapor. The project explores sacred grove phenomena, the mythical concept of a parallel world, and interspecies relations. Jura will conduct post-ethnographic research while investigating the interplay between organic decomposition and artificial synthesis. Within the framework of this project, he aims to bridge animistic ethnoreligious beliefs with speculative futures, using performative language, materials such as pine resin, and AI-powered sculpting techniques.
