Between two worlds, this is where the art of Murshida Arzu Alpanas is set. Her paintings and sketches express an open cultural understanding, which relies on transcultural links instead of culturally stereotyped thinking.
Born and raised in Dhaka, Murshida Arzu Alpana received her art education in the Southern Asia and Europe: in Berlin, to be more precise. In 1993 she arrived in the city as a DAAD scholar and at the Universität der Künste Berlin became student of the master class under Karl Horst Hödicke. Since then she has lived and worked in Bangladesh and Germany.
Murshida Arzu Alpana paints personal stories and stories of others, dreams, nightmares, fears, wishes. The result is melancholic and cheerful at the same time. Powerful as well as subtle colours, techniques and materials is what she uses in her dispute with fundamental topics such as (interpersonal) human experiences, love, hate, disappointment and trust, topics not bound by any continental or cultural borders and being quasi personal and universal.
Between July and September 2010 Murshida Arzu Alpana was Artist in Residence of the Goethe-Institut Prag at MeetFactory.
