Poyuan Juan

Poyuan Juan (b. 1999) is a Taipei-based artist whose work investigates the cultural afterlives of digital platforms, with a focus on online games, virtual environments, and the aesthetics of technological obsolescence. Juan’s practice operates at the intersection of digital archaeology and new media art, tracing the residues of networked interaction and interrogating the material conditions of virtual experience. Drawing on his background in visual arts and his immersion in post-internet culture, he integrates machinima, game engines, and 3D imaging tools to create time-based works that explore cyberqueer narratives, online communities, and the collapsing boundary between simulation and memory. His work asks what remains when virtual worlds decay, and how histories unfold within algorithmic architectures.

Poyuan Juan has held solo exhibitions at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei Digital Art Center, and Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, and has also exhibited and screened works in Athens, Milan, London, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and Taipei.

Date of residence:  2. 9. – 31. 10. 2025

RESIDENCY PROJECT

Poyuan Juan's residency project builds upon their ongoing investigation into the relationships between sculpture, monuments, and public space, with a focus on the cultural and historical layers embedded within a specific site and its surrounding areas. Expanding on a previous body of work centered on monuments, the project explores how the erection, placement, removal, and recontextualization of sculptural forms interact with urban memory, contested histories, and collective identity in the context of evolving public spaces.

Utilizing 3D-printed sculptures, video, and narrative elements, the project reflects on the role of technology in shaping memory, examines the tension between monument and anti-monument, and addresses the sociopolitical implications embedded in public art and spatial representation.
