GRADATION
Vertical Gradation
is a drawing in space. Even though it's static, it's in a constant
motion. Vertical Gradation operates
as a map of relationships – creating coordinates between the place it rises
from, the light shed on it, which it absorbs and reflects, and the movements
and sounds of a body and its physical and performative qualities. It's a place
for meditation in motion, for contemplation and relaxation, encouraging us to
remain in the state of observation.
OBSERVATION
Observation opens up the phase of spatial exploration.
It proceeds from the ground to the top, both vertically and diagonally. It
arouses curiosity, makes one walk around, opening up to relational constellations
of perceptive interactions. It's all part of the game – time, concentration,
location, patience or haste.
The light at the end of the staircase is like a
drawing pen. It brings in new structures, changes the colors of the object, its
reflection on the walls. It changes the emotional charge of the environment,
composing variable patterns, the gradation of shapes in the fleeting time.
The rhythm of breathing, a recording of strain and the
promise of intimacy hang in the space.
GETTING CLOSER
The phase of intimacy starts during a bodily contact
with the object. A step, a touch, a deepening breath, rise and descend, or staggering
and leaning against are contact points of mutual relationship.
Getting closer opens up a new angle for the body,
observation becomes an experience. The body becomes its part, apprehending both
the object and itself in it at the same time. The body inside behaves
differently than the body observing – it draws consequences from its own
motion. Its very presence becomes a live drawing, set in motion by a radial of rising
and descending. It gives the body back its inner concentration, turning it to
its own physicality; it's a performative element per se.
The rhythm of breathing, the recording of strain and the
outcome of becoming intimate smolder in the body.
