Kaleidoscopic instrumental project A Hawk and A Hacksaw was founded over twenty years ago by Jeremy Barnes, drummer of the cult psych-rock band Neutral Milk Hotel. Completely burnt out by playing the drums, Barnes picked up the accordion and embarked on a Don Quixote-esque journey towards folk music horizons, inspired by the traditional musics of Eastern Europe.
After moving from rural France to New Mexico in 2004, Barnes meets violinist Heather Trost and AHAH become a duo that grows to tour with Swans, Wilco, Andrew Bird, Portishead and Of Montreal in the following years. The band travels to Romania and Hungary, where they record an album with the members of Hun Hangár Ensemble, fully soaking up the atmosphere of local folk music traditions.
In 2011 and 2012, AHAH tour cinemas, soundtracking Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, a legendary 1965 movie directed by Georgian film genius Sergei Parajanov. The band release this retrospective soundtrack as a full-length record, You Have Already Gone to the Other World, on their own label Living Music Duplication, which becomes home to a number of other collaborative records and projects in the following years.
A Hawk and A Hacksaw embark on a tour this fall after a several year hiatus, playing their first-ever club show in Prague. We host them at MeetFactory on Sunday 6th October in a seated concert with a limited capacity.
Opening the night is Ka Baird, enigmatic project that combines extended voice and microphone techniques with electronics and psychoacoustic interplay of flutes and other woodwinds in a singular ritualistic performance.
Before the concert, MeetFactory is hosting the October edition of Synapse Knowledge, an afternoon block of lectures with Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost and their fascinating collection of archival video footage of Balkan wedding ceremonies from the 80s and 90s; an insight into the creative process of New York-based experimental artist, producer and multiinstrumentalist Ka Baird and a panel discussion with contemporary Czech female musicians, focused on finding a balance between their music careers and motherhood. Entry to the lectures is free of charge for the ticket-holders.
