Baird is known and heralded for their raw, ecstatic, and boundary pushing live solo performances which often involve energetic and experimental body movements, vocal and mic techniques and flute playing. Ka Baird is known as one of the founding and continuing members of the long running avant psych project Spires That In The Sunset Rise. As part of Synapse Knowledge, Baird will present their singular approach to music production, performance, sound and improvisation in their artist talk.
✸ Heather Trost + Jeremy Barnes: Love in the Time of Ceausescu
Amateur VHS documentation of Romanian and Balkan wedding music in the 1980's and 1990's
18:30, Studio 38, 1st floor*
English
HeatherTrost and JeremyBarnes of A Hawk and A Hacksaw have poured over hours of amateur footage of Balkan weddings from the 1980's and '90's. This was an era of upheaval and turmoil in the region, and a time when the best musicians were not adequately documented. The VHS documentation of these musicians is in many cases the best representation of their artistry. During the wedding celebrations they were given a freedom that was not always tolerated in the recording studio or state sponsored TV presentations. A Hawk and A Hacksaw will present incredible footage from Romania, Serbia, Albania, Greece, Kosovo and Turkey that shows not only the wide breadth and beauty of the music of the Balkan region, but also the beauty of the people, the folk customs as well as cultural innovations in an era of transition.
