Punk meets jazz! A few years back, the powerful rhythm section of the pioneering post-hardcore band Fugazi (that has been on an indefinite hiatus since 2003) — Brendan Canty (drums) and Joe Lally (bass) — joined forces with experimental guitar virtuoso Anthony Pirog (Skysaw, New Electric) into a fresh instrumental formation The Messthetics, newly expanded with renowned jazz saxophonist and composer James Brandon Lewis. This March, they released an eponymous collaborative LP on the acclaimed NY-based jazz label Impulse! and are taking it on a tour later this year with a stop at MeetFactory, followed by a concert at Le Guess Who? and a string of shows at the finest of European clubs.
The Messthetics' sound is anchored in live improvisation and a relentless passion for exploring uncharted sonic territories that lie somewhere on the intersection of punk-rock and free jazz. With their rhythmic acrobatics, the endless grooves and forward-thinking melodic experimentation, The Messthetics' compositions do at times seem to echo the rich history of jazz rock, though their rawness, the potent energy and stripped-down nature won't deny their punk roots.
This meeting of punk and jazz heavyweights sidesteps contemporary trends; instead we’re treated to four players finding common ground as they slip between genres. (— Pitchfork)
Rožnov's own Chorobopop will open the night, bringing their fresh third record Svobodě na stopě.
