I came across the term 'toxic femininity' some time ago and it's been like an annoying ear worm ever since. The kind of ear worm you know only two notes from, which could belong to any song. And no one you ask about can tell you what it is. So instead of ignoring it, I decided to give into it and turn it into a new song of its own.
On June 20 and 22nd, starting at 7 pm, we'll deal with some of the characters who embody the 'toxic femininity' trait, as defined by several Instagram & Twitter accounts preoccupied with restoring a natural order of things: passionate murderers, old hags, scientists, writers, ecologists, astrologists, bad moms, women with political agendas and more money than they deserve, women who give up their fertility and beauty for something else, who are too competitive, too loud, too individualistic, and even narcissistic, women who don't believe in god and masturbate, career women who act tough and try to embody something that belongs to the opposite sex, voluptuous femmes who use their bodies to 'ask for it and then yell rape', tomboys, jail-baits, trans women and just about everybody under the sun who identifies as a woman but refuses to give into the 'nice girl' stereotype.
The event consists of two evenings, the first organized as a reading group, and the second as a film projection and karaoke session. On both occasions, you are invited to contribute with your own toxicity, bringing along an annoying friend, a piece of writing that makes you spit bile, or that email thread where you tried so much to find the 'right tone' for the fucked up emotional shit you had to say that you even asked a friend to proofread before sending.
On both occasions, we'll provide the drinks and some weird fermented and/or pickled foods. I guess the menu choice has to do with the theme, where toxic femininity works like that: resilient, preservable for ages, and growing in uncontrollable clusters mysteriously synchronized.
