Assaf Hinden (Israel, 1988) is a visual artist based in Tel Aviv and Antwerp. Hinden places photography and lens-based media at the center of his works, he creates installations combining photographs, collages, video, and time-based technologies alongside objects and relics from public and private archives, through which he examines the authenticity of photography as a documentary-testimonial authority.
His works repeatedly explore various cultural representations, while engaging with identity questions through the examinations of objects and remains. In his recent projects, he explores various themes surrounding the provenance, source, and evolution of art, in addition to addressing broader questions regarding preservation, the manipulation of images — and therefore of meanings.
The works are inspired by elements from the past, both collective and biographical that comment on a contemporary unstable present. Hence the works usually incorporate backstories and historical events on which he intervenes and comments with his work, by creating different dialogues between the past and the present, and between facts and speculations.
